As a kid, Klaus Teuber’s “Catan” was my absolute favorite board game: I spent countless hours with familiy and friends playing and even extending the game with our own rule set. After rediscovering the game as an adult, I was still enjoying the game but realized that the mechanics don’t guarantee a balanced experience for all players: Random events in the early game often decide the final winner and reduce the gaming fun for those who had back luck in the beginning.
Looking for ways to extend rule set and game mechanics in a novel way, I decided to create a digital extension to the physical game and teamed up with Olivier Brückner to develop the web app Fate of Catan.
The application supports the board game extensions “Seafarers” and “Cities & Knights” and up to 6 players. The team can fine-tune their gaming experience by selecting the frequency and nature of digital events by picking a number on an “Evilness” and a “Funkiness” scale.
The application randomly spawns that events that might happy only once or introduce new rules that are valid for the entire game of for a certain time frame.
Users can view which events are selected based on their configuration and toggle individual cards. They are also invited to suggest new events that might be added to the database after a manual review.
